Design Systems Accessibility Enterprise

Dell Design System

Contributing accessible, enterprise-scale components to Dell's global design system — tooltips, dropdowns, tables, and data visualization across 10,000+ implementations.

Overview

Designed accessible components meeting WCAG 2.1 standards for implementation across Dell.com, the Apex strategic cloud platform, and 10,000+ digital experiences throughout Dell’s ecosystem.

The Challenge

  • Enterprise Accessibility — Dedicated A11Y specialists reviewing every component
  • Global Collaboration — Working across time zones and continents
  • Massive Scale — Components for thousands of internal users
  • Business-Critical — Platforms driving e-commerce revenue and hybrid cloud products

Components Delivered

Tooltip

Designed touchscreen interactions with tap-to-dismiss functionality. Analyzed other design systems and compared tooltips versus popovers to find the right approach.

Pie Chart

Developed an accessible color palette with high contrast ratios for color-blind users. Designed responsive charts with integrated tooltips and keyboard navigation.

Built single-select, multi-select, and filterable options, leveraging existing system components for consistency.

Table

Cross-functional project with design and engineering teams. Five table size ranges with three density variants. Removed tooltip-in-header feature after accessibility testing revealed screen reader issues.

Results

  • 10,000+ implementations across Dell Digital experiences
  • WCAG 2.1 compliance across all components
  • Components deployed across Dell.com driving global e-commerce revenue
  • Integrated into Apex strategic hybrid cloud product
  • Reduced engineering defects and overhead with faster release cycles
